Lucasfilm has officially revealed the cast for Star Wars: Starfighter and released the first look at the film, showing Ryan Gosling’s character alongside his on-screen nephew.

The new image shows Gosling and young actor Flynn Gray sitting on a vehicle resembling a landspeeder, a classic nod to the original 1977 Star Wars movie.

Gosling’s character is tasked with protecting his young nephew from dangerous enemies. Flynn Gray plays the nephew, while Matt Smith of House of the Dragon and Mia Goth are set to play some of the villains.

The cast also includes Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird from The Inbetweeners, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams. Filming has started in England.

Shawn Levy, who directed Deadpool and Wolverine, is leading the project. He described Starfighter as a standalone story, not a prequel or sequel. “This is a standalone. It’s not a prequel, not a sequel. It’s a new adventure. It’s set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet,” Levy said. The script was written by Jonathan Tropper, known for The Adam Project.

The story takes place five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, offering a fresh perspective within the Star Wars timeline. Levy said he feels honored to be part of the franchise.

“From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally,” he said.

“Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”

Starfighter is produced by Levy and Kathleen Kennedy, with Ryan Gosling, Dan Levine, Mary McLaglen, and Josh McLaglen serving as executive producers. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on May 28, 2027, following The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is set for May 2026.

Starfighter looks like it could bring an exciting new story to the Star Wars universe while introducing fresh characters and a high-profile cast. Seeing Ryan Gosling in a Star Wars adventure is especially intriguing. Are you excited for this new film? Share your thoughts in the comments.
