Alan Cumming is returning to the Marvel universe as Nightcrawler in Avengers: Doomsday, and he has been very open about what filming the movie has been like.

The actor first played the teleporting mutant in 2003’s X2: X-Men United, but this time, the experience has been very different.

In a recent chat with Movie Clips, Cumming described the film as “a superhero o***.” He explained, “There’s so many people in it! I feel so bad for the person who had to schedule the film. There’s like 30 of the busiest actors in the world.”

His comment highlights just how massive the cast of the movie is, which includes returning X-Men stars like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, and Rebecca Romijn, as well as newcomers like Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

Cumming previously revealed that much of his work was done alone, often in front of green screens with face replacement technology. “I did the entire film in isolation. Lots of green screen, face replacement. They even gave characters fake names. I don’t know who I was acting with half the time,” he said, laughing.

He also joked about earlier mistakes, adding, “I broke the internet by mentioning something once, but honestly, I might have got it wrong.”

In the past, Cumming was hesitant to return as Nightcrawler because of the long hours required for heavy makeup and costume. Modern effects have now made the process much faster and easier, making his comeback more comfortable. Marvel officially confirmed his return during a five-hour live stream that revealed 27 cast members for the upcoming crossover.

While promoting the film, Cumming admitted he tends to spill secrets. While guest hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live!, he jokingly asked the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps about avoiding spoilers.

Pedro Pascal, who plays Mister Fantastic, teased him about his history, saying, “The biggest leak that we’ve had comes from our host.” Cumming acknowledged that one of his previous comments about a fight between Nightcrawler and Mister Fantastic caused some issues behind the scenes. “My publicist called me. You know the wrath of your publicist is, not the wrath you want to have,” he said.

Avengers: Doomsday is directed by the Russo brothers, with Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely writing the script.

The movie will bring together the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, New Avengers, and Wakandans as they face Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. It will hit US theaters on December 18, 2026, and will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.
