Prime Video Axes Hit Series Despite 95% Audience Approval
Prime Video has once again canceled a show, leaving fans frustrated. According to Deadline, the streaming service will not move forward with a second season of the YA drama Motorheads.
The series first premiered on May 20 with a 10-episode season and quickly gained attention. Created by John A. Norris, who also serves as showrunner, the series stars Ryan Phillippe, Nathalie Kelley, Michael Cimino, Melissa Collazo, Uriah Shelton, and Nicolas Cantu.
Motorheads tells the story of a group of outsiders in a struggling Rust Belt town who bond over a love of street racing while navigating the challenges of high school, first heartbreak, and life in a town trying to find hope.
Despite the cancellation, there is a possibility the show could find a new home. Sources say the producers have started reaching out to other platforms with Amazon’s permission.
Executive producer Jason Seagraves told Deadline, “We set out to make a show with no agenda and a lot of heart, to give families something they can watch together. While Johnny and I are disappointed Motorheads won’t be continuing at Prime Video, we couldn’t be more proud of what the team created.”
“Despite going into release with impossibly low audience awareness, our passionate and vocal fan base led the charge and made the series impossible to ignore. Their enthusiasm has energized us, and we’re optimistic we’ll find a home that believes in and supports the show.”
Motorheads performed well on Prime Video, often appearing in the platform’s daily Top 10 in the U.S. The series holds a 78% critic approval rating and a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
However, it never made it into Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 streaming rankings, which may have influenced the cancellation decision. Last month, Amazon MGM Studio’s head of TV, Vernon Sanders, mentioned the show’s progress and the potential for a second season to Deadline.
Fans reacted strongly on social media, expressing disappointment and anger. Many shared their frustration at losing a series they had grown attached to.
One fan wrote, “They cancelled Motorheads on Prime and now my life has lost meaning. Oh Harris Bowers, you could’ve been alive… F*** you Prime, I’m done with you.”
Others echoed the sentiment, lamenting the loss of another show with original storytelling. “Motorheads is cancelled and again another show that had so much potential is gone. At this point, what IS the point?”
Another fan said, “I spent weeks with an emotional void after Motorheads’ finale, that car crash, Caitlyn’s call… and then they cancel it? How do you move on from a show that never let you heal?”
In my opinion, it’s frustrating to see a show with such a high audience score cut short. Motorheads clearly connected with viewers and had a dedicated fan base. While business decisions are complex, it feels like fans’ enthusiasm and engagement should count for more. What do you think about this cancellation? Share your thoughts in the comments.
