The Marvel Cinematic Universe is getting darker, and fans just got their new real taste. Marvel Studios has released a brand-new trailer for Marvel Zombies, an upcoming animated series on Disney+.

The show is based on the Marvel Comics series and spins directly out of the 2021 What If…? episode “What If… Zombies?!”.

Marvel Zombies will be the sixteenth Marvel Studios series and the first one to carry a TV-MA rating, marking it as their first adult animated project.

Zeb Wells created the series and is serving as head writer, while Bryan Andrews is the showrunner and director. According to Marvel Studios, the animation comes from Stellar Creative Lab, the same team behind What If…?.

The story takes place in an alternate timeline where a strange virus has transformed many of Earth’s heroes, including the Avengers, into flesh-hungry zombies.

A group of survivors journeys across a ruined world to find a way to end the plague. The creators said the show is inspired by the same “What If… Zombies?!” episode but will push the story much further.

Marvel Zombies features a stacked voice cast, with actors returning to their MCU roles. Awkwafina voices Katy, David Harbour returns as Red Guardian, and Simu Liu plays Shang-Chi, who is bitten but keeps the infection from spreading using the Ten Rings.

Elizabeth Olsen is back as a zombie Scarlet Witch, while Florence Pugh voices Yelena Belova. Other returning stars include Paul Rudd as a still-living head of Ant-Man, Randall Park as Jimmy Woo, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Dominique Thorne as Ironheart, and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan.

Vellani revealed to Marvel Studios that her character Kamala plays a big role in the story. She explained, “They described her as the Frodo of the story,” comparing her to the Lord of the Rings hero who carries the burden of saving the world.

The cast also introduces Todd Williams as Blade Knight, a mix of Blade and Moon Knight. Hudson Thames reprises his role as Spider-Man. On the zombie side, fans can expect terrifying versions of Captain America, Hawkeye, Captain Marvel, Abomination, and more.

Marvel Zombies will consist of four episodes and arrives on Disney+ on September 24. It is part of Phase Six of the MCU.

With the trailer now out, fans finally get a look at how brutal and wild this series is going to be. It promises action, horror, and some shocking twists as the MCU dives headfirst into a zombie apocalypse.
