Live-Action ‘Street Fighter’ Movie Reveals Major Production Update
Legendary Entertainment’s live-action Street Fighter movie is moving forward, and fans are getting their first big production update.
The company announced back on April 3, 2023, that it had acquired the film and TV rights to the iconic video game franchise.
Since then, the project has seen several changes behind the camera. In April 2023, Danny and Michael Philippou were in talks to direct, but by June 2024, the brothers stepped away to focus on another project, Bring Her Back. According to Daniel Richtman, Kitao Sakurai was later in discussions to take over the director’s role.
On February 19, 2025, it was confirmed that Sakurai would helm the movie, with filming planned for Sydney, Australia, in fall 2025.
Originally, the film was set to hit theaters on March 20, 2026, through Sony Pictures Releasing, but the release date was removed from the schedule less than a year before that planned premiere.
Casting news has been gradually emerging over the past year. Nexus Point News reported in April 2025 that Andrew Koji and Noah Centineo were being considered for Ryu and Ken, with Dalan Musson working on the latest script draft. By May, both Koji and Centineo, along with Jason Momoa and Roman Reigns, were in talks to join the movie, with Momoa set to play Blanka and Reigns as Akuma.
In the following months, Jeff Sneider reported that Walton Goggins, Orville Peck, and Eric André were being considered for M. Bison, Vega, and the Windbag announcer, respectively. Deadline also reported that Callina Liang, Andrew Schulz, David Dastmalchian, and Vidyut Jammwal are in talks for Chun-Li, Dan Hibiki, M. Bison, and Dhalsim.
Nexus Point News later added that 50 Cent and Cody Rhodes are being considered for Balrog and Guile, while Fightful reported Hirooki Goto for E. Honda.
The official Street Fighter X account confirmed the start of production, posting, “The strongest fighters have gathered! The Street Fighter movie is now officially in production with @Legendary. Make sure to follow @Street_Fighter for updates.” The tweet was shared by Takayuki Nakayama.
