Netflix Pulls the Plug on Major 2025 Crime Drama Hit After Just One Season
Netflix has pulled the plug on The Waterfront, its 2025 crime drama from Kevin Williamson, only weeks after its debut. The show premiered on June 19 and was cancelled in August after just one season.
Williamson, known for creating Dawson’s Creek and Scream, drew inspiration for the series from his own family.
The story followed the Buckleys, a family that had long controlled the coastal town of Havenport, North Carolina, through their fishing and restaurant businesses. Things began to unravel when patriarch Harlan, played by Holt McCallany, suffered two heart attacks and stepped away from leadership.
With the family empire faltering, his wife Belle, played by Maria Bello, and their son Cane, portrayed by Jake Weary, turned to drug dealing to stay afloat. But Cane’s criminal troubles dragged the Buckleys into danger, forcing Harlan to return and try to save the family.
The cast also featured Melissa Benoist, Michael Gaston, and Topher Grace. Critics gave the show a mixed response. Rotten Tomatoes reported a 68% approval rating from 44 reviews, calling it “grim and pulpy” but still “a gripping binge.” Metacritic gave it a score of 54 out of 100, signaling average reviews.
Despite the mixed reactions, the series seemed to catch on with viewers. For three weeks after its release, it was Netflix’s most-watched English-language series worldwide.
The decision to cancel the show came as a surprise, given its performance. Williamson had hoped to continue the story, but shared his gratitude after the announcement.
“A big thank you to everyone who watched The Waterfront. While I’m sad the Buckleys won’t be back for Season 2, I’m celebrating the joy that was Season 1. I had the pleasure of working with a dream cast and crew… Thank you to my partners at Universal TV. And thank you to Netflix for taking a chance on a very personal story. You were truly a joy to work with! It was one of the best experiences of my life!”
