‘The Witcher’ Shakes Up Cast as Key Character Is Recast Ahead of Season 4
Netflix’s fantasy hit The Witcher is making a major cast change ahead of its fourth season. Fan site Redanian Intelligence reports that Peter Mullan will take over the role of Vesemir, replacing Kim Bodnia.
The change is due to scheduling conflicts, as Bodnia was already committed to another project. According to his representatives, “Kim will not return as Vesemir as his current shooting diary didn’t fit in with Netflix’s shooting schedule of The Witcher Season 4.”
Mullan, a Scottish actor, brings solid experience to the role. He has appeared in HBO’s Westworld and Amazon Prime Video’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Fans may also recognize him from Netflix’s Ozark, where he played Jacob Snell, and from the acclaimed miniseries Top of the Lake, for which he earned an Emmy nomination.
In addition to acting, Mullan is an award-winning filmmaker; his 2002 film The Magdalene Sisters won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
The Witcher season four is set to premiere later this year. Producers have already confirmed that the fifth season will be the series’ last. The show is based on the fantasy novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and gained even wider popularity thanks to the video game adaptations.
Season three of The Witcher received generally favorable reviews. Rotten Tomatoes shows a 79% approval rating based on 47 critics, with an average rating of 7.1/10. The site’s critical consensus reads: “Capably shouldered by Henry Cavill’s gruff charm, The Witcher’s plotty third season pays a fittingly fond farewell to this particular Geralt of Rivia.” Metacritic gave the season a weighted score of 71 out of 100 for the first five episodes and 65 out of 100 for the last three, indicating generally favorable reviews.
Despite positive reviews, the show experienced a 30% drop in viewership compared to the previous season.
This recasting of Vesemir could bring a fresh take to the fan-favorite character. Peter Mullan’s experience in both fantasy and dramatic roles makes him a strong addition to the series. Personally, I think this change could reinvigorate the dynamic of the Witcher world and give fans something new to look forward to. What do you think about the recast?
