The show’s creator, Allan Mauduit, spent four years developing the series. Mauduit is best known for the Canal+ comedy Kabul Kitchen, which ran for three seasons.
He co-wrote Néro with Jean-Patrick Benes, Martin Douaire, Raphaëlle Richet, and Nicolas Digard. Mauduit directs the first four episodes, while Ludovic Colbeau-Justin, known for Jack Mimoun & The Secrets of Val Verde, directs the remaining episodes. The series was produced by Karé Productions for Netflix.
Néro follows the story of Pio Marmaï’s character, a cynical assassin in 16th-century France. During a historic drought, social tensions rise, and Néro faces a personal and moral dilemma.
After being betrayed by his former master, he sets out to rescue his daughter, Perla, who was raised as an orphan. The trailer shows Néro and Perla traveling to Ségur, with Perla learning to follow in her father’s deadly footsteps.
Pio Marmaï stars as Néro, marking his second major television series after appearing in the French adaptation of In Treatment for Arte. He has also played Porthos in the two-part adaptation of The Three Musketeers.
Belgian actor Olivier Gourmet joins the cast as Horace, a priest who assigns Néro the task of transporting his daughter safely. Alice Isaaz stars as Hortense, adding to the main cast that also includes Louis-Do De Lencquesaing as Rochemort and Camille Razat, best known for Emily in Paris. Other cast members include Yann Gael, David Talbot, Lili-Rose Carlier Taboury, Max Baissette de Malglaive, and Noam Morgensztern.
Filming took place in spring and summer 2024 across southern France, including Perpignan and the Pyrénées-Orientales. The medieval fortress of Salses, built by the Catholic kings of Spain in the 16th century, served as one of the main locations.
The production also traveled to Vintimille in Italy, Nice, Menton, and reportedly Barcelona, Spain, for additional shoots, according to local news sources ActuPerpignan and Nice-Matin.
Néro The Assassin looks like a thrilling mix of history, adventure, and family drama. The combination of stunning locations, a strong cast, and high-stakes action makes it one of the French Netflix series to watch this year. What do you think about this upcoming series?
