HBO is set to expand the Game of Thrones universe with a new prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, scheduled to premiere in January.

The show is based on George R. R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas and takes place 90 years before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire. It follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, a hedge knight, and a young Prince Aegon V Targaryen, nicknamed Egg.

Peter Claffey will play Ser Duncan, while Dexter Sol Ansell stars as Egg. The series also features Finn Bennett as Prince Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel as Prince Baelor Targaryen, Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and Sam Spruell as Prince Maekar Targaryen.

HBO first announced plans for the series in January 2021. Steven Conrad was reported to be writing for the show in late 2021, and by April 2023, HBO officially ordered the series. Ira Parker, who previously wrote for House of the Dragon, wrote the pilot episode.

Casting began in October 2023, with filming planned for 2024. By February 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed that pre-production had begun, with Martin serving as creator and executive producer.

Owen Harris has been hired to direct the first three episodes and also serve as an executive producer, helping establish the tone of the series. Sarah Adina Smith will direct three of the six episodes in the first season.

HBO programming chief Casey Bloys confirmed the series will debut in January, with House of the Dragon expected to premiere just outside the current Emmy eligibility cycle.
