The backlash comes after ABC, which is owned by Disney, suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely following the comedian’s September 15 monologue. In the segment, Kimmel addressed MAGA supporters’ reactions to the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
He said, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”
The decision by ABC followed criticism from Federal Communications Commission chairman Brendan Carr, a Trump appointee, who claimed Kimmel’s comments were “appearing to directly mislead the American public.”
Nexstar Media, which owns ABC affiliate stations across the U.S., also chose to stop airing Kimmel’s show.
Fans reacted quickly on social media, sharing screenshots of canceled subscriptions with hashtags like #CancelDisney and #CancelDisneyPlus. Many expressed anger at Disney, accusing the company of bowing to political pressure.
One user wrote, “I canceled @hulu & @DisneyPlus immediately… My reason—ABC caving to Trump & his Fascism. Hurt ’em where it counts, their wallets!” Another added, “Our annual trip to Disney Orlando won’t happen… I’m putting my money where my mouth is.”
Several celebrities joined the call. Tatiana Maslany, star of Disney+’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, encouraged her fans on Instagram to “Cancel your (Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN) subscriptions.” Former Supernatural actor Misha Collins said on X that he would cancel his Disney+ subscription “indefinitely.”
Some conservative viewers were upset with Kimmel’s suggestion that the accused killer of Charlie Kirk had MAGA ties. As of September 19, authorities had not confirmed a motive. Carr, speaking on commentator Benny Johnson’s YouTube show, called Kimmel’s remarks “the sickest conduct possible.”
This controversy has sparked a wider conversation about free speech, media influence, and political pressure on corporations. Disney now faces the challenge of balancing public response with its corporate and political relationships.
