According to the official website, “Meguro Ren has been cast as the protagonist, the ultimate assassin Sakamoto Taro! Furthermore, the film will be directed by the comedy genius Fukuda Yuichi! Under the guidance of director Tabuchi Keiya, who has teamed up with Fukuda, Meguro also took on the challenge of superhuman action scenes, full of sharpness and power, never before seen!”
The site also teased a dual-sided visual featuring another character, Hososaki Gen, raising excitement for the “life-risking everyday life” depicted in the film.

Meguro shared his thoughts on joining the project in a new interview. “I am truly honored to be playing the lead role in ‘Sakamoto Days,’ a beloved manga and anime series by many. I was approached about this project while filming a Monday 9 pm drama last year. Up until now, I’ve mostly starred in serious dramas, often taking on roles for someone else, wanting to convey something to the audience. However, this time, I wanted to appear in ‘Sakamoto Days’ for myself,” he said.
He added, “The character I play, Taro Sakamoto, was once feared as a legendary assassin, but is now a gentle father who puts his family first. This contrast is his greatest charm and makes him a truly cool character.”
The live-action movie is directed by Yuichi Fukuda, known for his work on other anime adaptations like Gintama, Sgt. Frog, and Super Salaryman Mr. Saenai. The film is set to release in Japan in 2026, though there’s no word yet on a North American release.
This adaptation looks set to combine high-stakes action with heartfelt family moments, capturing the essence of the anime while introducing it to a broader audience. Personally, I’m intrigued to see how Meguro balances the intense action with the softer, human side of Sakamoto. Fans of the anime and newcomers alike will likely have plenty to look forward to.
