Hulu Pulls the Plug on Critically Acclaimed Sitcom After Just One Season
Hulu has canceled the sitcom “Mid-Century Modern” after just one season, despite strong reviews from critics.
The series, created by Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, premiered on Hulu on March 28, and quickly gained praise for its humor, charm, and performances.
Co-creator Max Mutchnick shared the news on Instagram, writing, “Ten great episodes… Not enough. But we loved making every single one of them. We’re gonna miss our very special show. Thanks to everyone who watched.”

The show starred Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer, Nathan Lee Graham, and Linda Lavin, marking Lavin’s final television role before her passing in December 2024. She had completed seven episodes, and her scenes from one episode were later moved to the eighth episode so she appeared in a total of eight episodes.
“Mid-Century Modern” followed three late-middle-aged gay friends who move in together in Palm Springs after an unexpected death. Living with the wealthiest friend’s mother, they navigate life, love, and friendship as a chosen family.
The series earned positive reviews from critics. Rotten Tomatoes reported an 88% approval rating from 26 critics, calling the show “endearingly old-fashioned” while noting its modern and risqué humor. On Metacritic, it holds a score of 66 out of 100, indicating generally favorable reviews.
Critics praised the show for combining classic sitcom sensibilities with a fresh perspective. Matthew Creith of TheWrap said the show “embraces the spirit of classic sitcoms while adding a fresh, gay perspective,” highlighting the strong chemistry between the cast. Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times added that the series “balances humor with friendship among gay men” and called Lane’s lead role long overdue, while noting Lavin’s performance as particularly moving.
Despite its critical success, Hulu decided not to continue the series. Mutchnick and Kohan thanked fans for supporting the show and celebrated its unique blend of humor and heart.
