James Cameron has revealed new details about his upcoming film, Avatar: Fire and Ash. The movie is the third installment in the Avatar series and a direct sequel to 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water.

Cameron co-wrote the script with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, based on a story they developed with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. The film is produced by Lightstorm Entertainment and distributed by 20th Century Studios.

Many familiar faces return for this installment, including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, and CCH Pounder, among others. Fans can expect to see the characters they know from previous films continue their adventures in Pandora.

The movie has been in development for many years. Cameron first expressed interest in making sequels to Avatar back in 2006, and the first two sequels were announced in 2010 after the success of the original.

However, filming underwater performance capture and developing new technology caused long delays. Production for Fire and Ash began in New Zealand on September 25, 2017, at the same time as The Way of Water, and wrapped in December 2020 after over three years of shooting.

The release of Avatar: Fire and Ash has been pushed back multiple times. The latest schedule sets the U.S. release for December 19, 2025. Cameron has also confirmed that two more sequels, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, are in progress and expected to come out in 2029 and 2031.

In a recent interview with Variety, Cameron shared that the film will run around three hours. “And we’re at three hours, big surprise! But it works beautifully, and the actors were super-excited about that idea. It’s like, oh, okay, that feels right, you know?”

He also talked about focusing on music and thematic consistency, saying the film has been rewatched and “it’s a pretty good ride, I have to say!”
