Hit Showtime Series Set to Conclude After Eight Seasons
Showtime has announced that its long-running drama, The Chi, will wrap up with its upcoming eighth season.
The series, created and produced by Lena Waithe, has been praised for its authentic portrayal of life on the South Side of Chicago.
According to Deadline, the decision to end the show came before production on Season 8 began, giving the creative team time to craft a proper conclusion for the story and its characters.
In a statement, Waithe reflected on the significance of the show and what it represents. “When I created The Chi, it wasn’t just about making a TV show — it was about owning our narratives and telling our stories with truth, care, nuance and complexity. It was about showing the soul of the South Side — the beauty, the pain, the grit, and the magic that lives in every block, and in every family,” she said.
“After much reflection, we have made the decision to end The Chi with season 8. I know, for the sake of our story and our characters, it’s the right thing.”
Waithe added that she is focused on giving fans a final season that honors the world and characters she has built. “I am committed to delivering a final season that our Chi Family deserves. It’s been the honor of my life to build a platform for artists to shine — not just in front of the camera, but behind the scenes as well. To helm the longest-running Black drama on television is a huge honor and it’s something I don’t take lightly,” she said.
The Chi, which first premiered in 2018, tells the story of interconnected lives in a South Side Chicago neighborhood. The show centers around Emmett, Brandon, Ronnie, and Kevin, whose lives collide after a series of dramatic events.
The series has been praised for its realism, emotional depth, and social commentary, offering viewers an intimate look at the challenges and joys of life in the South Side.
The series has been a critical success. On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season holds an 87% approval rating based on 47 reviews, with an average rating of 7.5/10. The site’s consensus states, “Like an optimistic companion to The Wire, The Chi explores the complexities of life in the South Side of Chicago, with a tender touch and a clear affection for its captivating characters.”
On Metacritic, the show earned a score of 73 out of 100 based on 22 critics, indicating “generally favorable reviews.”
The Chi was renewed for its seventh season in May 2024, which premiered on May 18, 2025, and then for its eighth season in May 2025. A few months later, Showtime confirmed that the eighth season would mark the series’ conclusion.
