Matt Damon once shared some of his all-time favorite movies. Alongside classics like Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather and Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas, Damon singled out Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 comedy Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

“That’s another good comedy and a Kubrick movie, so it ticks a couple of boxes for me,” Damon said.

“It sticks out to me for Peter Sellers, actually. Sellers, I mean, he’s so brilliant in that movie. And I was sitting there wondering, should I go for Being There? Should I go for another Sellers movie? I just wanted Sellers on this list because he was so great.”

“That’s a movie where he’s as dynamic as he ever was. He played, however many… three or four different people… and they’re all just totally different and totally great. That guy was just absolutely brilliant and terribly funny.” He said.

Dr. Strangelove is a political satire that pokes fun at Cold War fears of nuclear conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. Peter Sellers stars in three roles, portraying the President of the United States, his scientific advisor Dr. Strangelove, and a Royal Air Force exchange officer.

The film also features George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden, and Slim Pickens. The plot revolves around an unstable U.S. Air Force general who orders a nuclear strike on the Soviet Union, and the efforts of the President, military leaders, and advisors to prevent global disaster.

The film is widely regarded as one of the greatest comedies ever made. It has received numerous accolades, including four Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for Sellers.

It also won several BAFTA awards and the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation. In 1989, the U.S. Library of Congress selected Dr. Strangelove for preservation in the National Film Registry, recognizing it as culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant.

Damon highlighted Sellers’ performance as a key reason the film stands out to him. For the actor, Sellers’ ability to play multiple distinct characters with humor and depth makes Dr. Strangelove unforgettable.
