Elon Musk says his artificial intelligence company, xAI, will be able to create a “great” video game before the end of next year.

The announcement came after a user on X posted a short AI-generated clip that looked like a war game, made using Grok Imagine, xAI’s animation tool. Musk replied to the post saying, “The xAI game studio will release a great AI-generated game before the end of next year.”

He later added that Grok, the company’s chatbot, will also be able to make a “watchable movie before the end of next year and really good movies in 2027.”

xAI has been working on several AI tools since its launch in 2023. One of its first big projects was Aurora, a system that can create images from text. That was followed by Grok Imagine, which can produce six-second video clips with sound. Musk now says the next step is full video games, a much harder challenge since games combine visuals, sound, movement, and player interaction.

During an xAI livestream in February, Musk announced plans to start an AI gaming studio. He said, “If you’re interested in joining us and building AI games, please join xAI. We’re announcing it tonight, let’s go.”

Musk’s interest in games goes back decades. In the mid-1990s, he worked at Rocket Science Games, where he helped on a few titles for the Sega Mega CD. Both games, Loadstar: The Legend of Tully Bodine and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs: The Second Cataclysm, got mixed reviews at the time.

Now, nearly 30 years later, Musk is betting on AI to change how games are made. While his promise of a “great” AI-generated game by 2026 sounds ambitious, it also raises questions about what “AI-made” games will actually look like, and whether players will enjoy them as much as traditional ones.
