Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton has passed away, and her family has confirmed the cause of death. According to People magazine, the legendary star died of pneumonia on Saturday, October 11, in Los Angeles. Paramedics responded to her home and transported her to a nearby hospital.

In a statement shared with People, Keaton’s family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from fans.

“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” the statement said.

The family also suggested ways fans could honor Keaton’s memory. “She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her,” they said.

A friend told People that Keaton’s health had “declined very suddenly” in recent months, and that only close family had been aware of her condition, choosing to keep it private.

Tributes have poured in from co-stars, friends, and fans alike, honoring Keaton’s incredible career and humanitarian work. In addition to her acting, she was a passionate architectural preservationist and a devoted animal lover.

To commemorate her memory, AMC Theatres will rerelease her films Annie Hall and Something’s Gotta Give for one-week runs starting Friday. Keaton won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Annie Hall and received nominations for Reds, Something’s Gotta Give, and Marvin’s Room.

Her family’s statement and the continued tributes highlight the lasting impact of Diane Keaton, both on-screen and off.
