Hideo Kojima, the creator behind games like Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid, wants to use artificial intelligence to help with game development and make the process faster and cheaper. Speaking to Wired Japan, Kojima explained that he sees AI as a helpful partner rather than a replacement for human creativity.

A lot of people use AI in creative work to come up with ideas, but I think of AI as more of a friend … I would lead the creative part and use AI to boost efficiency, he said.

Kojima said he hopes AI can take care of “tedious tasks,” which could reduce costs and speed up production. He imagines a setup where he would be “co-creating with AI instead of just using it.” These tasks might include things like managing lipsyncing in different languages.

Other game developers share similar views. Rebecka Coutaz, VP and general manager of Battlefield Studios Europe, told BBC Newsbeat that while AI is used during early development, the final game is still made by human designers and artists. She said AI helps “to allow more time and more space to be creative.”

Criterion’s design director Fasahat Salim also spoke positively about AI. He called it “not anything to be scared of” and described it as a tool to improve workflow rather than replace creativity. “It’s just a matter of how we can incorporate that productively into our workflows, how can we leverage that to take our games to the next level,” Salim explained.

Kojima’s approach suggests that AI could become a creative assistant in the industry, handling repetitive or time-consuming tasks so designers can focus on bigger ideas.
