Netflix’s new historical adventure series Néro the Assassin has quickly caught the attention of viewers around the world. Released on October 8, the French-language show has been drawing praise for its dark tone, intense action, and emotional story.

The series stars Pio Marmaï as Néro, a skilled assassin living in 16th-century France during a time of severe drought and political unrest.

Once betrayed by his master, Néro now fights to save his daughter, Perla, who was raised as an orphan after their separation. As the story unfolds, the two reunite and form a deadly alliance, with Néro teaching Perla how to survive and fight in a brutal world.

Alongside Marmaï, the cast includes Olivier Gourmet as Horace, a priest who gives Néro a dangerous mission, to escort his daughter to the city of Ségur. Alice Isaaz appears as Hortense, and Louis-Do De Lencquesaing plays Rochemort. Camille Razat, best known for Emily in Paris, also joins the show in an undisclosed role. Other cast members include Yann Gael, David Talbot, Lili-Rose Carlier Taboury, Max Baissette de Malglaive, and Noam Morgensztern.

Since its release, Néro the Assassin has earned strong reactions on social media.

One fan wrote, “What a show this is, brilliant stuff from France, can’t wait for season 2.” Another added, “Watch Néro the Assassin on Netflix. It will test your faith. Check if you are radical, then you will understand how radicalism works and how religion can and has been used as a tool for politics and mass control.”

Others have praised the show’s intensity and action, with one viewer saying, “God**** what an insane, brutal naked fight in the new French period action series ‘Néro the Assassin’ on Netflix.” Another commented, “I’m enjoying Néro the Assassin on Netflix. Historical adventure with a touch of fantasy.”

Fans also appreciated the show’s main character, calling him a unique and complex antihero. “I really enjoyed Néro the Assassin. Nicely layered dark fantasy, and Néro is a terrific amoral in-it-for-myself antihero. I really hope there’s a season 2,” one viewer said. Some criticized that the show also touches on themes of religion and power, with one fan mentioning, “It fits into a theme seen in a fair few movies and series — good magic versus bad Christianity, which is disappointing. The series centers around the 1540 A.D. European drought.”

Based on early reactions, Néro the Assassin seems to have found its audience, especially among fans of dark historical dramas. The mix of action, emotion, and moral conflict has made it one of Netflix’s most talked-about new shows this month.

With fans already asking for a second season, it looks like Néro’s story is far from over. What do you think about Néro the Assassin? Have you watched it yet? Share your thoughts in the comments.
