Kristen Bell Limits Instagram Comments Following Anniversary Post Controversy
Kristen Bell has limited who can comment on her Instagram following criticism of a post celebrating her 12-year wedding anniversary with Dax Shepard.
The move comes after fans reacted negatively to a caption many found insensitive.
On Friday, Bell shared a photo of herself and Shepard hugging. She wrote, “Happy 12th wedding anniversary to the man who once said to me: ‘I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I’m heavily incentivized to kill you, I never would.'”
The post drew anger online because it joked about domestic violence during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Fans criticized it for making light of a serious and dangerous issue. Some wrote, “Is this… supposed to be funny?”
Others said, “Not funny at all. What kind of man says that to his wife? Oh wait, I know exactly what kind. Get out now, Kristen,” and “Crazy thing to joke about honestly. Sincerely, someone who thankfully survived.” Another comment read, “This is tone deaf and offensive during any month.”
Bell and Shepard have been together since late 2007. They got engaged in January 2010 but delayed marriage until California legalized same-sex marriage. They co-starred in several films together, including When in Rome (2010), Hit and Run (2012), and CHiPs (2017).
After the Supreme Court struck down part of the Defense of Marriage Act in June 2013, Bell proposed to Shepard via Twitter, and he accepted. The couple married at the Beverly Hills County Clerk’s Office on October 16, 2013. They have two daughters, born in March 2013 and December 2014.
Limiting comments appears to be Bell’s way of managing the backlash while still celebrating her marriage publicly.
