Produced by the team behind Barbarian, including Roy Lee, Raphael Margules, and J. D. Lifshitz, the cast also features Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén, and Rupert Friend. The film originally premiered in the United States on January 31, via Warner Bros. Pictures and has already grossed $36.7 million on a $10 million budget.
Critics have responded positively. Rotten Tomatoes reports that 93% of 258 reviews were favorable, with the consensus reading, “A fiendishly clever contraption that doesn’t rest on the laurels of its twists, Companion thrillingly puts the demented into domestic bliss.” Metacritic assigned the film a 70 out of 100, indicating generally favorable reviews, while audience polls gave the movie a B+ on CinemaScore and four out of five stars on PostTrak.
Chris Evangelista of /Film called it “the first great film of 2025” and praised the originality and performances of Thatcher and Quaid. Kevin Maher of The Times described it as “essentially a ‘robot girlfriend’ movie… but one that begins on astonishingly strong form,” highlighting Thatcher’s work.
Stephanie Banbury of the Financial Times noted, “A robot that turns against its puny human controller is hardly a new idea, but the current anxiety around AI gives Companion topical punch.” Some critics were more critical, like Benjamin Lee of The Guardian, who said, “The film is more sleekly made than it is thoughtfully written… leaving things on a so-what shrug,” giving it two out of five stars. The A.V. Club’s Jesse Hassenger called the film “Comedy Ex Machina with the faintest hint of Her, neutered with a very Big Studio approach,” giving it a C+.
Companion offers a mix of suspense, dark humor, and commentary on technology and relationships, making it one of the standout sci-fi horror films of 2025. Its success on streaming platforms like Prime Video shows that audiences are eager for innovative, high-concept thrillers.
