Sydney Sweeney Reveals She Was Told to Get Botox at 16 to Make It in Hollywood
Sydney Sweeney has revealed that breaking into Hollywood wasn’t always easy, especially as a teenager from rural Idaho.
In a recent interview with Variety, the Christy star shared some of the unusual and sometimes uncomfortable advice she received while auditioning for roles.
Sweeney said that early in her career, someone suggested she get Botox at just 16 years old to improve her chances. “I have very strong eyebrow muscles,” she explained while demonstrating them.
“And I had someone tell me to fix my face or else I’m not going to make it. I should get Botox. I was 16!”
She also recalled another audition where the casting director was distracted, eating chips while she performed. “I’m like, ‘You’re not paying attention at all,’” she said.
Despite rejecting cosmetic procedures, Sweeney still caught the eye of Mike White, creator of the HBO series The White Lotus. White praised her natural presence, saying, “There was just something very unaffected by her. She was very likable. And I thought that that would be helpful because the part is so unlikable on the page. Then in editing, you realize she just pops on-screen.”
“She’s obviously lovely in person and photogenic. But my eyes kept going to her, no matter who’s in the scene with her. That’s natural screen magnetism that is hard to quantify. She just has that. I don’t know what makes somebody a star, but there is something about her that just is.”
Sweeney’s experiences show that young actors often face pressure to alter their appearance or identity to fit Hollywood standards. Yet, sticking to their true selves helped them succeed in the long run.
