Disney’s live-action Aladdin sequel is reportedly moving forward, with production expected to start in early 2026.

According to Production List, Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, and Will Smith are all expected to reprise their roles. Filming locations are likely to include London, other parts of England, and the United States.

The sequel has been in development for several years. Back in 2019, producer Dan Lin expressed excitement for a follow-up, saying Disney was exploring ideas for a story that would be “fresh and new”. Lin also hoped to bring back director Guy Ritchie and Will Smith as the Genie.

He noted that the new movie wouldn’t directly adapt the animated sequels The Return of Jafar or Aladdin and the King of Thieves, but could borrow elements from them.

In February 2020, Variety confirmed that John Gatins and Andrea Berloff were attached to write the script. Lin and Jonathan Eirich were set to produce, and the main cast, including Massoud, Scott, and Smith, were expected to return.

There were some doubts about the sequel in recent years. In early 2023, Mena Massoud suggested it was “very unlikely at this point”, fueling rumors that the project had stalled. He later clarified that the film “undoubtedly will get a sequel”, noting the success of the first live-action Aladdin and the audience’s enthusiasm for repeat viewings.

Massoud also mentioned that the Hollywood artists’ strike may have delayed progress, but with the strike over, he is now waiting for further news.

The upcoming sequel will continue the story of Aladdin, the street-smart young man who wins the heart of Princess Jasmine with the help of a magical genie. Fans can expect a mix of adventure, music, and the magic that made the 2019 film a hit.
