20th Century Studios’ latest Predator film, Predator: Badlands, is off to a strong start at the box office, hitting nearly $37 million over the weekend after earning $15.6 million from Friday previews.

The film has also achieved a record-breaking CinemaScore for the franchise, earning an A-, surpassing previous highs set by the original 1987 movie and its 1990 sequel, both of which scored B+. According to Screen Engine/Comscore PostTrak, 78% of viewers gave a “definite recommend,” and the film received five-star ratings — a rare achievement that indicates strong audience satisfaction.

Fans are responding well to this new take on the Predator franchise, directed, produced, and written by Dan Trachtenberg, with producers Ben Rosenblatt and John Davis. The film’s higher-than-expected box office results, originally projected around $25 million, are being fueled by positive word of mouth.

Industry observers note that the film’s momentum is stronger than Disney’s recent release Tron: Ares, which also had high-profile stunts but hasn’t matched Badlands’ early box office performance.

The movie distinguishes itself by putting the franchise’s iconic alien villain in the protagonist role. This shift, along with PG-13 rating instead of an R, hasn’t harmed its appeal. “Switching ratings hasn’t dented the interest,” industry analysts say, adding that the movie’s marketing, which features dynamic sci-fi imagery rather than simple one-sheets of the creature, helps it stand out.

Demographic data shows that older viewers remain the main audience. Men over 25 make up 57% of viewers, while women over 25 account for 22%. Younger audiences, especially teens, make up only a small portion, with 5% of viewers aged 13-17. Diversity among audiences is notable, with 44% Caucasian, 26% Latino and Hispanic, 15% Black, and 8% Asian American.

The strong reception reflects the power of fan engagement and careful creative choices. With the combination of effective marketing, appealing new storyline elements, and audience satisfaction, Predator: Badlands is proving that the franchise can still excite viewers decades after its debut.
