A new trailer has dropped for Project Hail Mary, the upcoming science fiction adventure directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, starring Ryan Gosling.

The film, based on Andy Weir’s 2021 novel, marks Lord and Miller’s return to directing after 12 years, following 22 Jump Street in 2014 and their well-known departure from Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018. Gosling not only stars but also serves as a producer on the project, which also features Sandra Hüller and Milana Vayntrub.

Project Hail Mary tells the story of astronaut Ryland Grace, played by Gosling, who wakes up aboard an interstellar spacecraft with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He gradually realizes that he is the only survivor of a mission to the Tau Ceti system, sent to find a solution to a catastrophic problem threatening Earth.

Grace must rely on his intelligence, scientific knowledge, and determination to complete the mission. According to Amazon MGM Studios, he may not be completely alone on this journey.

The cast also includes Ken Leung, Lionel Boyce, Liz Kingsman, Orion Lee, and James Ortiz, portraying members of the Hail Mary crew or other key roles. Sandra Hüller plays Eva Stratt, Grace’s superior and head of the Hail Mary project, while Milana Vayntrub plays Olesya Ilyukhina, one of the original astronauts selected for the mission.

The production of Project Hail Mary began after MGM acquired the rights to Andy Weir’s novel for $3 million in March 2020.

By May, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were on board as directors and producers, with Drew Goddard writing the screenplay. Goddard previously adapted Weir’s The Martian for the big screen. In 2024, Sandra Hüller and Milana Vayntrub joined the cast, and Greig Fraser was hired as cinematographer. Filming started on June 3, 2024, in the United Kingdom and wrapped on October 26, 2024.

Amazon MGM Studios is set to release the film in the United States on March 20, 2026, with Sony Pictures Releasing handling the international release. The movie will also be available in IMAX.
