Russia Labels S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Developer GSC Game World “Undesirable” Over ‘Aggressive Russophobic Content’
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developer GSC Game World has been officially added to Russia’s list of “undesirable organisations,” according to a statement from the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office.
Being on this list means the studio is now considered a threat to “the foundations of Russia’s constitutional order, defensive capacity and security,” and anyone in Russia working with the company could face legal consequences.
GSC Game World, based in Ukraine, has faced huge challenges since Russia’s invasion in 2022. The war forced the studio to move from Kyiv to Prague.
Tragically, one of its developers, Volodymyr Yezhov, died in combat in December 2022. The company has also been targeted repeatedly by Russian propaganda and by critics unhappy with the studio’s Ukrainian roots.
The studio has actively supported Ukraine. It raised $800,000 for the Ukrainian military through charity sales of its games and encouraged fans to donate as well. Despite this, the Russian government had not formally labeled GSC as “undesirable” until now.
The Prosecutor General’s Office claims GSC gave financial support to the Ukrainian armed forces and spread a “view of Russia as an ‘aggressor state’, including the dissemination of materials discrediting to our country.” The statement also says the studio’s management donated $17 million to help Ukrainian military personnel, though no independent source confirms that figure.
Russia’s authorities also criticized S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, accusing it of “promoting Ukrainian narratives [and] containing aggressive Russophobic content.” Having reviewed the game, many players and critics have found little evidence to support the claim, noting that it may have been triggered by the removal of the Russian voice track.
This latest move marks another escalation in the ongoing tension between Russia and Ukrainian creators, particularly those in gaming who continue to operate openly outside Russian influence.
