Fans of The Mandalorian have spent a long time trying to figure out whether the show would return to TV or if the story had fully moved on to the new movie. Now there is a clear answer, and it comes straight from Jon Favreau.

In a recent issue of Empire Magazine, the creator explained that he already finished writing a full fourth season of the series.

Favreau said that the work on the show did not stop when plans for the movie began. According to him, β€œWe were planning on doing a fourth season. I had actually written all of that. I still have Season 4 sitting on my desk here.” His comments show that the season was not dropped or reused for the film.

He also talked about how the movie took shape. Favreau explained to the magazine that β€œIt’s structured around a movie structure, as opposed to a serialized weekly television show. So there’s a larger throw to the whole thing.”

This means the film was built as a movie from the start, not as a reworked set of TV episodes. Because of that, the story he wrote for Season 4 stands on its own.

Still, even though the scripts are finished, there is no clear sign that Season 4 will ever be produced. Reports from early 2023 showed that Disney wanted Lucasfilm to push film development faster. Since then, the focus has shifted toward the big screen, not toward more episodes of the show.

Lucasfilm announced The Mandalorian and Grogu in January 2024, saying it would continue the story fans know from the series. Favreau is directing and co-writing the movie with Dave Filoni, and both of them are producing it with Kathleen Kennedy.

Filming began in August 2024, and the movie is planned to release on May 22, 2026. Characters like Garazeb β€œZeb” Orrelios, the Anzellan species, and a new version of the Razor Crest will appear.
