K-Pop Demon Hunters, released on Netflix on June 20, is an animated musical urban fantasy film directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who co-wrote the screenplay with Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan. The film tells the story of Huntrix, a K-pop girl group who secretly hunt demons, and their rivalry with the Saja Boys, a boy band whose members are actually demons. The film features voice work from Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Yunjin Kim, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and Lee Byung-hun.
The project began from Kang’s desire to create a story inspired by her Korean heritage, blending mythology, demonology, and K-pop culture. Animation was handled by Sony Pictures Imageworks, with visual influences from concert lighting, music videos, anime, and Korean dramas. The soundtrack includes original songs by multiple musicians, along with a score composed by Marcelo Zarvos.
The film received widespread praise for its animation, visuals, voice acting, writing, and music. It became Netflix’s most-watched original title, with 325 million views, and its sing-along theatrical release set new records for the streaming service, becoming the first Netflix film to top the U.S. box office.
The soundtrack also made history, becoming the first to have four songs in the Billboard Hot 100 top ten, earning Platinum certification, and receiving five Grammy nominations. A short film titled Debut: A K-Pop Demon Hunters Story was rated in September, and a sequel is planned for 2029.
