Sony Pictures is getting ready to bring back the Men in Black franchise, according to Deadline. The studio has started early work on a new movie, though no actors or directors are attached yet.

Reports claim that Chris Bremner, who helped write Bad Boys for Life, has been hired to create the script. Sony did not comment on the project.

People familiar with the situation said that Will Smith could be invited back once the script is finished. He would be one of the first to read it, and the hope is that he might return as Agent J. It is not clear yet if he would lead the film or take on a smaller role, possibly passing the story to a new character.

The plan, at least for now, is to include Agent J in the first draft of the script. Sources also told Deadline that Smith is not attached at this time and will only decide after he sees the script.

Men in Black began as a comic book created by Lowell Cunningham before becoming a long-running film series. The story centers on a secret group that keeps alien activity hidden from the public.

Over the years, the franchise has expanded into movies, an animated show, video games and even a theme park attraction.

With Bremner working on the script and fans waiting to see if Smith returns, the new film marks the first real movement for the series in years. Sony’s recent success with reviving the Bad Boys franchise seems to have opened the door for another comeback.
