Sydney Sweeney recently shared details about the intense physical changes she went through for her role in the boxing film Christy.

The 28-year-old actress gained over 30 pounds to play boxer Christy Martin, focusing on strength training and adjusting her diet over several months to look the part.

After filming wrapped, Sweeney faced a tight schedule. She had just seven weeks before starting work on The Housemaid and the third season of Euphoria. Speaking with PEOPLE, she said, “I had to be really strict with myself,” describing the effort it took to lose the weight she had gained.

Sweeney explained that gaining the weight was a challenge on its own. “When I was training, it was really hard to put on all the weight. I was eating so much food. Like, everything you could possibly imagine,” she said. She also drank multiple protein shakes and took creatine, which she said caused bloating.

To return to her normal figure, Sweeney stopped the intense workouts and supplements. “When you stop working out and taking all your protein shakes, you lose muscle super fast. It’s the first thing to go before fat. So, that, I dropped within two weeks,” she explained. She then focused on a clean diet and added plenty of cardio to shed the rest of the weight.

While Sweeney admitted that this was an extreme challenge, she said her active lifestyle and metabolism helped her. “I’ve been a very active person my entire life. Like, I was a super active kid, and I’ve always kind of just stayed active and always had a good metabolism. I can gain weight, but I can lose it too,” she shared. She also suggested that this might be the only time she pushes her body this hard for a role.

Christy is now showing in theaters, and Sweeney’s next project, The Housemaid, co-starring Amanda Seyfried, will be released on December 19.
