In 2014, hackers calling themselves Guardians of Peace broke into Sony Pictures and dumped thousands of private emails online.

Among the most talked-about messages were the ones between producer Scott Rudin and Sony boss Amy Pascal. The emails showed Rudin was furious with Angelina Jolie. She had pushed hard to delay David Fincher’s Steve Jobs movie so Fincher could wait for her to finish directing her first film, In the Land of Blood and Honey.

Fincher ended up walking away from the project. Rudin wrote to Pascal, “I’m not destroying my career over a minimally talented spoiled brat who thought nothing of shoving this off her plate for 18 months so she could go direct a movie.”

He also said, “I have no desire to be making a movie with her, or anybody, that she runs and we don’t.”He kept going about a possible Cleopatra film with Jolie, writing, “There is no movie of Cleopatra to be made (and how that is a bad thing given the insanity and the rampaging ego of this spoiled woman, and the cost of this movie is beyond me).”

He finished with, “I have zero appetite for the indulgence of spoiled brats, and I will tell her this myself if you don’t.”Other leaked emails between Pascal and Rudin got even more attention. They were joking about what movies President Obama might like before Pascal was due to meet him.

They listed films about slavery and Black history such as Django Unchained, 12 Years a Slave, The Butler, and Amistad. Rudin added, “I bet he likes Kevin Hart.” Many people called the exchange racist.

When the leak blew up, Rudin said the messages were “private emails between friends and colleagues written in haste and without much thought or sensitivity.” He also said he was “profoundly and deeply sorry.”
