Fans got their new look at The Super Mario Galaxy Movie during The Game Awards 2025, months before it hits theaters. The short teaser shows the iconic Nintendo characters in action and has already created a lot of excitement online.

The movie follows the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie from 2023, which earned over $1.3 billion worldwide. Both films are produced by Illumination’s Chris Meledandri and Nintendo game director Shigeru Miyamoto.

The preview focuses on a tense moment inside Princess Peach’s castle. Bowser Jr. corners Mario and Luigi, demanding they hand over his father, who has been shrunk and locked inside a tiny castle within Peach’s fortress.

Luigi tries to calm the situation, but Bowser Jr. attacks Mario after his magical paintbrush transforms into a spiked ball. A short fight breaks out, with Luigi landing a knee strike that many fans say is reminiscent of a classic video game move.

The film is an animated adventure and comedy based on the 2007 game Super Mario Galaxy and the wider Mario franchise. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic return as directors, and Matthew Fogel is the screenwriter. Returning voice actors include Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.

Benny Safdie joins as Bowser Jr., and Brie Larson voices Rosalina, the space princess and adoptive mother of the Lumas. The movie is produced by Illumination and Nintendo and will be distributed by Universal Pictures.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said in 2021 that the company was open to making more animated films if the first Mario movie succeeded. Following the 2023 box office hit, Illumination confirmed in March 2024 that a sequel was in development with the same directors and writer returning.

The story takes Mario and Luigi on a journey through space alongside Princess Peach and Toad to face off against Bowser Jr., who becomes the main threat while his father remains trapped. The film is set for a U.S. theatrical release on April 3, 2026.
