Tom Cruise has reportedly put his space movie on hold because it would have required approval from President Donald Trump.

Sources told Page Six that the actor, who was set to work with Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman, didn’t want to ask Trump for any favors to get the project moving.

“From what I understand, they would need NASA coordination to do the movie, and supposedly Tom Cruise did not want to ask Donald Trump for a favor,” the source said. “You’d need permission from the federal government.”

The insider added, “Tom didn’t want to ask for political reasons.” Cruise previously mentioned scheduling conflicts as the reason he declined Trump’s Kennedy Center Honor in August.

The space film was first reported in 2020, when Cruise was in talks with SpaceX and NASA. At that time, there reportedly wasn’t a completed script, and it’s unclear how far the project had progressed.

Trump-appointed NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine had expressed support for the movie, tweeting in 2020, “NASA is excited to work with @TomCruise on a film aboard the @Space_Station! We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make @NASA’s ambitious plans a reality,” according to NPR.

Cruise apparently decided not to risk asking whether Trump’s administration would approve the film. Meanwhile, Trump continues to publicly reference Cruise. Last month, when discussing B-2 bomber pilots who struck Iran, he described them as “perfect specimens” who ‘looked like Tom Cruise… but taller.’”
