Experts Predict This Movie Will Dominate the 2026 Box Office
ndustry experts are predicting that “Avengers: Doomsday” will be the highest-grossing movie of 2026.
Bloomberg recently compiled opinions from over 700 insiders in the entertainment world, and the Marvel superhero epic topped the list. The runner-up was “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” while live-action “Moana” and “Minions 3” were expected to earn the least.
Experts note that the Avengers franchise has a strong box office history. “Avengers: Endgame grossed $2.8 billion and the average Avengers film has earned around $1.9 billion,” the report explained, though they also acknowledged the post-pandemic challenges for big-budget releases. Still, there is strong confidence in the franchise over other major properties like Star Wars or Minions.
“Avengers: Doomsday” will be the fifth Avengers movie and the 39th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is produced by Marvel Studios and AGBO and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Anthony and Joe Russo are returning as directors, with Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely writing the script.
The movie features a massive ensemble cast, including Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and many others.
In the film, the Avengers join forces with Wakandans, the Fantastic Four, new Avengers, and the X-Men to battle Doctor Doom, played by Downey. Filming began in April at Pinewood Studios in England and wrapped in September, with additional scenes shot in Bahrain.
The movie has undergone several production changes. Initially, “The Kang Dynasty” and “Secret Wars” were announced as part of the MCU’s Phase Six, with different directors and writers attached. Legal issues involving Jonathan Majors, who was set to return as Kang the Conqueror, led to changes in the script and direction.
By July 2024, the Russos returned as directors, Downey was cast as the villain Doctor Doom, and the subtitle “Doomsday” was added.
“Avengers: Doomsday” is scheduled for release in the United States on December 18, 2026. Its sequel, “Secret Wars,” is expected a year later on December 17, 2027, continuing the MCU’s Phase Six storyline.
