Ricky Gervais Reveals the Jason Momoa and Peter Dinklage Joke He Never Told at the Golden Globes
Ricky Gervais, known for his bold and often shocking humor, has shared a joke he decided not to use during his time hosting the Golden Globes. Gervais has hosted the awards show five times and is famous for roasting Hollywood stars without holding back.
In his new Netflix special, Mortality, released Tuesday, Gervais explained that while the Golden Globes never censored him, he once chose to scrap a joke himself.
“I said earlier, I’ve never had a joke stopped by the Golden Globes, and that is absolutely true,” he said. “But I’ve just remembered the joke that I stopped myself, ’cause I bottled it a bit, and I think I was being over-cautious. I want to share it with you.”
The joke was aimed at Jason Momoa and involved a playful contrast with Peter Dinklage. Gervais described it as a way to show his own hesitation in tackling certain subjects. “I’m OK to slag off actors — who’s scared of actors? — but when it comes to a big dude, right, I’m not so brave,” he said.
He explained the setup: “I was going to go, ‘I’ve got nothing bad to say about our next presenter, because he’s got a c*** like a baby’s arm.’ And I told my mate I was gonna do that, and my mate went, ‘Do you think people will think that’s racist?’ I was like, ‘Why is it racist?’ ‘Well, because he’s a person of color.’ And I went, ‘No, it’s nothing to do with that. It’s to do with the fact that he’s so big that he’d probably have a c*** like a baby’s arm, right?’”
Gervais also shared the punchline he had planned as a follow-up: “I’ll go out and go, ‘I’ve got nothing bad to say about our next presenter, because he’s got a c*** like a baby’s arm — unlike Peter Dinklage, who’s got an arm like a baby’s c***.’” Despite his fearless style, he ultimately chose not to deliver the joke at the Golden Globes.
This year, comedian Nikki Glaser will host the Golden Globes for the second year in a row, with the ceremony scheduled for January 11.
