Doctor Doom Just Hijacked Google, and the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Search Trick Is Dangerously Fun

Marvel has never been shy about stretching its marketing beyond the movie screen. The studio has teased the next Avengers film through short clips, a coffee-shop pop-up themed around Doom’s origins and even a “Countdown to Doom” DVD case spotted in ‘VisionQuest.’ Now it has found a new place to leave breadcrumbs: your browser.

Searching for the film turns out to be a small adventure of its own. Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., has quietly taken over Google, which has fans buzzing a few weeks before the movie’s December release.

The ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ Google Easter egg is simple to trigger. Search for the film’s title, then click the Doom mask that appears, and your results warp into a menacing takeover. Doom’s gauntlets reach out toward 4 faction logos: Black Panther, X-Men, Fantastic Four and the Avengers.

Each logo opens a 5-question Marvel quiz tied to its team. Finish all 4, and you’re rewarded with a real-time countdown ticking down the seconds until the film hits theaters in December. It’s a neat way to turn a routine search into a mini fan event.

Fans have been quick to share the trick online. Some have even compared Doom’s flashy entrance to a magic act, which suits a villain who is both a genius inventor and a powerful sorcerer.

The choice of 4 factions has sparked speculation. Black Panther, X-Men, Fantastic Four and the Avengers could simply be the franchises most tied to the story, but some fans think it hints at who Doom has in his sights. Doom has already been collecting heroes in the way another villain once collected Infinity Stones, with the Hulk a near certainty.

Spider-Man could be on his radar too, thanks to the post-credits scene in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’ Doctor Strange has long been rumored to appear at Doom’s side, while Franklin Richards has been spotted alongside Doom in a Funko Pop figure. That leaves the Wakanda and X-Men sides of the equation, so Shuri and Cyclops might want to watch their backs.

The search trick is just the latest piece of a long campaign. Marvel released 4 short teaser clips in December and early January, and it unveiled the first full trailer at CinemaCon on April 16 before releasing it on YouTube on July 20. A new promo followed at D23 in August, introduced onstage by Kevin Feige, Downey, Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell.

The trailer finally showed Downey’s Doom, complete with a vague Eastern European accent that nods to his Latverian roots. It also features a showdown with Thor, who swings Stormbreaker at Doom’s head, only for Doom to stop it with just his fingers. German outlet kino.de reported the trailer passed 503 million views within a short time.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ follows heroes from 3 universes who are set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve encountered. The cast is enormous, including Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Sebastian Stan, Tom Hiddleston, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart.

The film is also the first part of a 2-film story. ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is scheduled to follow on December 17, 2027, and Joe Russo has described ‘Doomsday’ as the start of a “Phase 0.” That could explain why Doom, a character tied closely to the comics’ multiverse-ending event, is front and center.

Google Easter eggs have become a popular marketing tool for big releases, and this one is especially clever. It rewards fans who know their lore, and it doubles as a free ad every time someone searches for the movie. With less than 2 months to go, it also keeps the film at the top of everyone’s mind.

Whether the quiz hints at the true targets of Doom’s plans remains to be seen. For now, it’s a playful reminder that the countdown to December is very real, and that Doom is closer than you think.

Which Marvel faction do you think Doctor Doom will target first in Avengers: Doomsday?
