The Stranger Things universe is getting a brand-new spinoff, and the Duffer Brothers have shared some early details about what fans can expect. In a recent interview with Variety, Matt and Ross Duffer revealed that work on the live-action series will begin on Monday, January 5, 2026.

The new show will focus on a completely different story and mythology from the original series. “The spinoff is going to delve into [the mysterious rock Henry Creel found in the cave] and explain that, and you’re going to understand it. But it’s a completely different mythology,” the Duffers said.

They clarified that it won’t center on the Mind Flayer or other familiar threats, but will instead explore fresh territory while answering some remaining loose threads from the original show.

Fans shouldn’t expect to see any of the original Hawkins characters. The spinoff will feature entirely new actors, a different setting, and will take place in a different decade. While the Duffer Brothers are heavily involved in the project, they will not serve as showrunners.

A small scene in the series finale of Stranger Things offers a hint about the upcoming series. Ross Duffer said it gives viewers a clue about what’s to come. “It’s very different … but it’s also very much ‘Stranger Things,’” the brothers added.
