David Harbour Leaves Tony Gilroy’s “Behemoth” Citing “Stranger Things” Wrap as Reason
David Harbour has stepped away from “Behemoth!,” the upcoming drama from director Tony Gilroy and Searchlight Pictures, according to a representative for the studio who spoke with Variety.
The actor, known for his role as Jim Hopper on Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” was set to star alongside Pedro Pascal and Olivia Wilde.
Sources close to the project told Variety that Harbour decided to leave because he was exhausted after the intense wrap of “Stranger Things.”
The series’ final season was a months-long event, drawing global attention and constant media coverage. Harbour reportedly needed time to rest and recover, and the role in “Behemoth!” has already been recast, though no replacement has been announced. Reps for Harbour did not respond to requests for comment.
“Behemoth!” is described in an official logline as following “a musician from a family of musicians who returns to Los Angeles.” The story is meant to serve as “a love letter to the music of the movies and the people who make it.” Gilroy wrote the script, directs the film, and is producing alongside Sanne Wohlenberg.
Harbour has been open about his mental health journey. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder at 26, he has previously discussed the need for a broader conversation about mental illness. In a 2022 interview with Variety, he said, “The colors of that dialogue need to be much broader in the sense of everything. We pathologize this idea of normal and in truth, everybody has a lot of different experiences we should try to appreciate.”
The actor’s recent work includes films such as “Thunderbolts,” “A Working Man,” and “Gran Turismo,” as well as voice roles in series like “Marvel Zombies” and “Creature Commandos.”
