Margot Robbie has opened up about one of the scenes she found the most challenging while filming The Wolf of Wall Street.

Although Robbie has since starred in major hits like I, Tonya, Suicide Squad, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Babylon, and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, The Wolf of Wall Street was one of her first film roles at just 22 years old. Working alongside Leonardo DiCaprio was a huge opportunity, but certain scenes left her nervous.

In an interview with IndieWire, Robbie described the infamous nursery scene, where her character seduces her husband while he secretly records her. “I was secretly dreading that scene,” she admitted. “That was going to be more uncomfortable to watch than the s** scene at the end. It was going to be really awkward.”

Robbie told Porter Magazine that filming intimate scenes in front of a large crew was particularly embarrassing. “It doesn’t come across when you’re watching the movie, but in reality, we’re in a tiny bedroom with 30 crew crammed in. All men. And for 17 hours I’m pretending to be touching myself. It’s just a very weird thing and you have to bury the embarrassment and absurdity, really deep, and fully commit,” she explained.

She also discussed the intense sex scene that occurs before her character is physically attacked. “We just wanted it to be the most tragic s** scene you’ve ever seen. Just uncomfortable, and tragic.”

“Uncomfortable, because we wanted him to be so unaware of her repulsion towards him. Because so much of the nursery scene got cut out, something that you kind of miss is that [Jordan and Naomi] had a sick sort of aspect to their relationship. Not them as the real people, but the characters we created. He’s got this s***** obsession with her, and she uses her s***** to manipulate him, so they both play these weird sort of messed up s** games to just mess with each other.”

Robbie’s honesty gives fans a glimpse into the difficulties actors face when portraying intense, uncomfortable moments on screen. Even with a career full of high-profile roles, it’s clear that early experiences like this helped shape her confidence and skill as an actor.
