Oscar Shocker: ‘Sinners’ Sweeps 2026 Nominations as ‘Wicked: For Good’ Gets Zero Nods (Full List)

Thursday morning turned into a big moment for movie fans everywhere as the Academy officially revealed the nominations for the 98th Academy Awards. The announcement came directly from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and was presented live by actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman. Almost right away, one movie became the clear headline of the day.

Ryan Coogler’s vampire film Sinners made Oscar history. The movie earned 16 nominations, more than any single film has ever received before. That record-setting number instantly put Sinners at the center of the awards conversation and made it the most talked-about title of the morning.

Several other films also walked away with major recognition. Paul Thomas Anderson’s thriller One Battle After Another landed important nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Its cast had a strong showing too, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn, and Teyana Taylor all earning acting nods.

Chloé Zhao’s drama Hamnet performed well as well, and Marty Supreme became another standout. Timothée Chalamet is now seen as the top contender for Best Actor because of his role in that film. Rose Byrne also made the list for her performance in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, which had already been praised by critics.

Not everything went as expected, though. One of the biggest surprises was the total absence of Wicked: For Good. The sequel failed to receive a single nomination, leaving its stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo completely shut out. The snub quickly became one of the most debated topics online after the announcement.

Some of these results were hinted at earlier in the awards season. At the Golden Globes in January, wins by Chalamet, Rose Byrne, Teyana Taylor, Stellan Skarsgård for Sentimental Value, Jessie Buckley for Hamnet, and Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent helped build momentum leading into Oscar nominations.

Alongside the competitive awards, the Academy also honored longtime legends. According to the Academy, Dolly Parton received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her charity work, including donating around 285 million books to children through her Imagination Library. Tom Cruise, Debbie Allen, and production designer Wynn Thomas were also given honorary awards to celebrate their lasting impact on Hollywood.

The winners will be revealed soon. The 2026 Oscars will air on ABC on March 15, with Conan O’Brien returning as host.
