Ashton Kutcher Says Unreal Beauty Standards Come From Somewhere Unexpected — Not Hollywood
Ashton Kutcher is challenging the idea that Hollywood is to blame for today’s unrealistic beauty standards. Instead, he believes the real pressure comes from everyday life and constant exposure on social media. The actor shared his thoughts in a recent interview with the BBC while promoting his new sci-fi series The Beauty.
Kutcher explained that movies and TV are not setting the rules but reacting to what already exists. Entertainment is a reflection of society, he said. According to him, the biggest shift comes from the fact that people now feel like they are always being watched. With phones and social platforms everywhere, many feel they are “on camera” all the time. That pressure, he says, fuels the need to look perfect.
He also pushed back on the idea that only one type of look is valued in film and television. Kutcher pointed out that not every successful actor fits the same mold. Some are considered attractive in a classic way, while others stand out simply because they are interesting. It doesn’t make them not beautiful, it just makes them break a mould, he said.
The topic connects closely to his new show. In The Beauty, Kutcher plays Byron Forst, a powerful tech billionaire who introduces a drug that turns people into their most physically attractive selves.
The catch is that the transformation comes with horrifying side effects. Kutcher said the story reflects how cosmetic fixes are becoming more normal in real life. He compared treatments like Botox to something as casual as meeting for coffee. Beauty is tethered to security, success and power, right? he added.
Rebecca Hall, who stars alongside Kutcher, offered a warning about chasing one ideal look. She said the idea that everyone should buy into the same version of beauty is dangerous. There’s this notion that there is a standard we should all go out and buy, she told the BBC. It’s madness because then we’ll all end up looking exactly the same.
The series was created by Ryan Murphy and is meant to act as a sharp look at modern culture, especially the rise of cosmetic tweaks and weight-loss trends. Kutcher even mentioned the similarities between the show and the recent body-horror film The Substance, starring his ex-wife Demi Moore. He made it clear there is no tension there, saying simply, I’m so proud of her.
Outside of The Beauty, Kutcher remains busy. He continues to work in film and television and is also deeply involved in the tech world through his investment firm, Sound Ventures. At the same time, he keeps his family life with wife Mila Kunis mostly private, focusing on raising their two children away from the spotlight.
