ustin Baldoni is once again at the center of controversy as newly unsealed court documents reveal sharp criticism from the studio behind his 2024 film It Ends With Us.

According to the filings, a senior Sony executive reportedly called Baldoni a “moron” after he made controversial comments in a press interview about a domestic assault scene in the movie. The documents were reported by multiple outlets and provide a detailed look at tensions between Baldoni, co-star Blake Lively, and the studio.

The emails in question come from Danni Maggin, a senior marketing executive at Sony Pictures, dated August 5, 2024. Maggin allegedly criticized Baldoni’s interview with the Dallas Morning News, saying, Justin is basically alluding to ‘raping’ Atlas out of Lily. We cut the tape but he is a moron. The marketing team reportedly wanted to prevent Baldoni from making statements that could overshadow the film’s intended message of strength and resilience.

Josh Greenstein, then-president of Sony’s Motion Group, also weighed in, suggesting Baldoni shouldn’t do any more press. The studio reportedly wanted the promotion to focus on Lily’s empowerment rather than the darker aspects of the story. Baldoni, however, has pushed back against the claims, insisting that he never formally agreed to a restrictive marketing plan and that his intention was to bring attention to domestic violence rather than gloss over it.

In the interview, Baldoni described a scene where his character, Ryle, assaults Lily. He said Ryle’s motivation was essentially to force any love she had for Atlas out of her, adding, There’s another word we used and I’m sure in your imagination you can go there. Lively’s legal team has argued that these remarks violated the agreed promotional strategy for the film.

Despite the legal drama, Baldoni continues to work. His production company, Wayfarer Studios, is continuing as usual.

Meanwhile, Blake Lively has remained active on both screen and stage. She recently wrapped filming the sequel Another Simple Favor, set for a 2026 release.

The legal battle between Baldoni and Lively is scheduled for a full trial on May 18. U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman heard arguments for a summary judgment, but the release of unsealed emails, including texts between Lively and Taylor Swift, has kept public attention high. The case is seen as a potential precedent for creative control and public conduct in Hollywood productions.
