Live-Action ‘God of War’ Series Casts Its All-Seeing Odin
Prime Video has officially cast Mandy Patinkin as Odin in its upcoming live-action adaptation of the popular God of War video game. Known for his roles in The Princess Bride and Homeland, Patinkin will play the All-Father in this Norse mythology-inspired series.
The character of Odin is described as “not physically imposing or particularly god-like: but looks can be deceiving. He is the most powerful Aesir god, a patriarch who leads with an iron fist, and an unrivaled seeker of knowledge. When it comes to seeking out prophecy, Odin is paranoid, manipulative, and dangerous — he will do anything to try and prevent Ragnarök, the Norse end of days.”
Earlier on the same day, Prime Video also revealed that Icelandic-American actor Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, known for The Deep, will play Thor in the series.

The show has already been given a two-season order and is being developed by acclaimed showrunner Ronald D. Moore, whose previous work includes Battlestar Galactica and Outlander. Preproduction is currently underway in Vancouver. Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye, known for Shōgun and Fallout, will direct the first two episodes.
Other cast members previously announced include Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Max Parker as Heimdall. The rest of the cast has yet to be revealed. Amazon is hopeful that the series will follow in the footsteps of other successful video game adaptations, including their hit show Fallout, which is currently in its second season.
According to the official synopsis, “God of War follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of his wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”
The series is being co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in partnership with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
With Patinkin and Ólafsson joining the cast, fans can expect a mix of strong acting talent and rich storytelling, bringing the iconic video game world of gods, monsters, and epic battles to life on the small screen.
