Oprah Winfrey showed off serious strength on her 72nd birthday, proving age is just a number. On January 29, the media icon posted a video on Instagram of herself deadlifting at the gym, highlighting her fitness journey following her weight loss with the help of medications like Ozempic and Wegovy.

In the clip, Winfrey performed several reps with a weighted barbell while dressed in navy leggings and a long-sleeved blue top. She paired the outfit with white sneakers and kept her hair partly pulled back with a headband. After completing the set, she joked to the camera, I didn’t know what a deadlift was.

Winfrey explained that she only learned about deadlifting after chatting with a friend. I remember Adele told me she was deadlifting and I pretended to know what she was talking about, she said with a laugh, including a clip from her 2021 One Night Only interview with the singer. In that footage, Adele mentioned lifting 160 to 170 pounds, leaving Winfrey stunned.

In her Instagram caption, she reflected on her fitness journey. Life at 72 is looking different than every other decade. Two summers and two new knees ago, I decided to add strength training to my workouts because we all need to maintain muscle as we get older. Having had double knee surgery in 2021, Winfrey credited her strength to consistent training.

I can’t say I’m ready for the Olympics like Adele but I sure feel stronger, she added. She ended her birthday post with a challenge for her followers: So in honor of another trip around the sun for me, go try something new. You never know where it will lead you.

Winfrey hosted the primetime special AI and the Future of Us, exploring the societal impact of artificial intelligence with guests like Bill Gates and Sam Altman. She recently released the book Enough with Dr. Ania Jastreboff, showing her ongoing commitment to health and wellness advocacy.

Oprah’s Instagram post shows that even at 72, she is not only keeping fit but also inspiring others to try new things and stay strong. Her dedication to fitness and health, alongside her prolific career in media, film, and publishing, proves she continues to influence generations across multiple platforms.

Oprah’s openness about her workouts and recovery from knee surgery incredibly motivating. It’s a reminder that strength and wellness are lifelong goals. Do you think Oprah’s fitness journey at 72 inspires you to take on your own health challenges? Share your thoughts in the comments.
