Ryan Reynolds Criticized for ‘Condescending’ Comment to Child Reporter on Red Carpet
Ryan Reynolds is facing online backlash after a short red carpet interaction with a child reporter drew strong reactions from viewers. The moment happened during the Toronto International Film Festival and spread quickly across social media, where many people accused the actor of being rude rather than funny.
The clip, shared by attendees and fan accounts on platforms like X and TikTok, shows Reynolds speaking with a young interviewer named Liam. As the child began to introduce himself, Reynolds cut in and asked, Hi, what’s the question? When Liam then said, Hi Ryan, nice to meet you, Reynolds replied with a smile, Nice to meet you too, let’s skip to the question.
The exchange immediately felt awkward to some people watching nearby and to many who later saw the video online. Reynolds laughed as he spoke, but the humor did not land well with a large part of the audience. Critics said the comment felt dismissive, especially given that the interviewer was a child.
Liam later asked a playful question about Reynolds’ breakfast order and why it had so much Chipotle mayo on it. Reynolds answered with jokes, saying, You know what I wish I had some control over that, I can send a strongly worded letter to the chef. Consider it done young man. After learning the child’s name, he added, I’ll make it downright vicious, but I’ll say it’s from you though.
There is nothing funny about this. Kids do not understand these types of “jokes” where the person is being rude to them. It’s called being mean 🤬 #ryanreynolds pic.twitter.com/aIYYDzllnq

Even though Reynolds kept a friendly tone, many viewers felt the moment should have been handled more carefully. Social media reaction was swift. One user wrote, That poor kid, way to ruin someone’s confidence. Another commented, Not a kind manner at all with this child. He’s lucky he wanted to interview him. Others said the actor was forcing humor into a situation where it was not needed. One post read, Hey, Ryan. Not everything can be turned into a joke.
The timing of the backlash also added fuel to the discussion. Reynolds has been under heavier public attention due to his wife Blake Lively’s legal dispute connected to the film It Ends with Us. Reports about unsealed private text messages involving Reynolds and Lively had already put him in headlines before the festival.
Despite the criticism, Reynolds remains busy with several major projects. He is expected to appear in the film Animal Friends with Jason Momoa and Aubrey Plaza. Outside of acting, he continues his role as a co-owner of Wrexham AFC, which recently made news for a record transfer. At the same film festival, Reynolds was also promoting a documentary he is producing about John Candy titled John Candy: I Like Me.
The source of the controversy is the viral video itself, shared widely by social media users and entertainment accounts. While some fans defended Reynolds and said the exchange was harmless, others believe it showed a lack of awareness when dealing with a young reporter.
