Venom is returning to theaters in a new way. An animated movie based on the Marvel anti-hero is now in development. The Hollywood Reporter was first to share the news.

The film will be directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, the duo behind Final Destination Bloodlines. That horror sequel revived its franchise and earned $317.9 million worldwide. Their background suggests this new Venom project may take a darker tone.

Tom Hardy, who played Eddie Brock in the three live-action Venom films, is expected to be involved. A studio source confirmed his participation, but it is not yet clear if he will voice the character or take on a different role. The project is still in early development, so details could change.

The live-action Venom trilogy was not a hit with critics, but it performed strongly at the box office. Together, the films made more than $1.8 billion globally. Sony controls the character through its deal connected to the Spider-Man universe and will produce the animated feature under Sony Pictures Animation.

Sony’s animation arm has already found major success with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. A third installment, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is scheduled to arrive in 2027.

Lipovsky and Stein are also attached to co-write Gremlins 3, with Chris Columbus directing and producing and Steven Spielberg serving as executive producer. That film is also planned for release in 2027.

For now, the animated Venom film remains in development. Casting, release date, and story details have not been announced.

Moving Venom into animation could give the character more creative freedom. Animation allows for bold visuals and darker themes without limits. It will be interesting to see if Sony takes risks with the tone. What do you think about an animated Venom movie from the Final Destination Bloodlines team? Share your thoughts in the comments.
