Florence Pugh’s ‘East of Eden’ Is Netflix’s Slow-Burn Surprise, Growing Like ‘Adolescence’

Most Netflix hits arrive with a bang, dominate the charts for a week and then quietly fade. The ‘East of Eden‘ viewership story has gone the opposite way, and it shows that a patient audience can still turn a modest launch into a long-running success.

John Steinbeck’s novel is one of the most adapted American classics, with a film that made James Dean famous and a three-part ABC miniseries behind it. Netflix’s seven-episode limited series is the latest take, created and written by Zoe Kazan and led by Florence Pugh as the notorious Cathy Ames.

According to an exclusive report from Deadline, the series has now amassed 4.4x its debut-week views on Netflix. It grew from 6.5 million views in Week 1 to a cumulative 28.9 million views in Week 4.

That is the biggest four-week multiple for a limited series on the platform since ‘Adolescence’, which reached 4.7x. Among the 11 limited series since 2025 that stayed in the English-language Top 10 for all four weeks, only that phenomenon posted a stronger climb.

The start was far from explosive. The series premiered on Oct. 1 and reached No. 1 on the English-language chart with just four days of availability, but its 6.5 million views made it the lowest No. 1 opening since the end of March.

Then viewers kept arriving. On Nielsen’s streaming chart, the series debuted in third place with 782 million minutes viewed, and it held that ranking in its second week while its minutes viewed rose. That is rare for a new release and a clear sign that people were telling their friends.

By Week 4, the series still held the No. 6 spot on Netflix’s Top 10 with 3.6 million views. It has also reached the Top 10 in 86 countries, and it carries a Certified Fresh score of 88% from critics alongside an 85% audience score.

Word of mouth appears to be doing the heavy lifting, and social media has joined in. Fans have recreated their favorite Cathy Ames looks for Halloween on TikTok, while audio from the series has been trending on Instagram Reels.

Kazan has a simple theory about the appeal. She told Deadline that one of her aims was to “lower the barrier to entry a little” so that more people could feel a classic novel had something powerful for them.

Netflix executive Jinny Howe, head of UCAN scripted series, credited that approach too. She pointed to Kazan’s personal connection to the book and her choice to place Cathy at the center of the story, along with a bigger role for Lee, the family’s moral compass played by Hoon Lee. According to Howe, audiences around the world have embraced his performance.

The ensemble gives the slow burn plenty of fuel. Pugh, who also executive produces, stars opposite Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask and Mike Faist as Charles Trask, with Tracy Letts, Ciarán Hinds, Martha Plimpton, Joseph Zada and Joe Anders rounding out the cast.

The story follows the Trask family across generations in California’s Salinas Valley in the early 20th century, and the series retells the saga largely through Cathy’s perspective. Kazan co-showruns with Jeb Stuart, and the production filmed in New Zealand despite the story’s California roots.

That mix of period drama and family tragedy is the kind of prestige material that can build an audience over time instead of exploding on opening weekend.

The trajectory is a useful reminder that a quiet debut does not always spell trouble for a limited series. Strong reviews, a clear creative vision and word of mouth can do plenty of work over the course of a month.

Kazan is not slowing down, either. She is now adapting Larry McMurtry’s ‘Lonesome Dove’ as a series with Stuart, which suggests Netflix is happy to keep betting on her approach to classic literature.
