Anne Hathaway is stepping into the pop star spotlight in her new psychological thriller, Mother Mary, which hits theaters in April. The first song from the film, titled “Burial,” is now available on all streaming platforms. Hathaway co-wrote the track with Charli XCX, George Daniel of The 1975, and Jack Antonoff. The synth-pop song features Hathaway’s soaring vocals and a haunting refrain: “This is your burial.”

A24, the film’s studio, also released a short teaser video called Greatest Hits (Official Album Teaser), showing Hathaway performing in character on stage. This marks the first promotional material for Mother Mary since its December trailer.

In the film, Hathaway plays a pop star at a turning point in her career. The story follows her as she reconnects with her estranged best friend and former costume designer, played by Michaela Coel, right before a major comeback performance.

The movie also features Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Alba Baptista, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Sian Clifford, and FKA Twigs. Director David Lowery, known for The Green Knight, helms the film, while Twigs, Antonoff, and Charli XCX contributed additional original music.

Hathaway discussed the process of preparing for her role in a Vogue cover story. She described her character as “a sort of Gaga-Taylor Swift hybrid” and explained the effort required to fully inhabit the life of a major pop star. “I had to submit to being a beginner. The humility of that — showing up every day knowing you’re going to suck. And it has to be okay. You’re not ‘bad.’ You’re just a beginner,” she said.

“Getting to that mindset — I had to shed some things that were hard to shed. It was welcome. But it was hard, the way transformational experiences can be hard.”

Mother Mary opens in limited theaters on April 17 and expands nationwide on April 24.

Hathaway’s leap into music for a film role is bold and exciting. Her collaboration with top-tier musicians like Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff promises a soundtrack that could stand on its own. It will be interesting to see how she balances the dramatic intensity of the movie with her musical performance.
