Questions have been circulating about the future of the Avatar series after the release of Avatar: Fire & Ash. The film earned close to $1.5 billion worldwide, which is a major number for most movies. Still, the result led some fans to wonder if the franchise could slow down, especially since the films are known for their huge budgets.

Director James Cameron recently addressed the topic while attending the Saturn Awards, where he won Best Film Direction for Fire & Ash. During his remarks, Cameron spoke briefly about the next chapter of the series. According to Screen Rant, the filmmaker said it is “very likely” that Avatar 4 will happen. However, he also noted that Disney has not yet made a final decision.

The uncertainty comes partly from Cameron’s own comments in the past. He previously said the success of the third movie would play a big role in deciding whether the story should continue. The director has always been open about the large costs involved in making these films and the need for strong audience support.

Despite the questions, Cameron already has long-term plans for the story. He has discussed ideas that stretch beyond the third movie and has mapped out the larger arc of the franchise, including Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. Production on Fire & Ash was also demanding because it was created during the same period as 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water.

Another factor that may shape the future of the series is fan response. Screen Rant reported that Cameron is paying attention to what audiences think about the newest film. That feedback could influence future story choices, including the return of characters like Varang, played by Oona Chaplin, or the continued adventures involving creatures such as the fan-favorite space whale Payakan.

For now, Avatar: Fire & Ash is still playing in theaters while fans wait to hear if the next film will move forward.

The chances of Avatar 4 happening still look strong. Even with concerns about the latest box office results, the franchise remains one of the most successful in movie history. James Cameron has already built a huge world around Pandora, and many fans are still curious to see where the story goes next.

What do you think? Should the Avatar series continue with more films, or is it time to wrap up the saga? Share your thoughts in the comments.
