Winona Ryder, 54, Looks Incredible 38 Years After ‘Heathers’ Made Her a Star
Winona Ryder, now 54, has been captivating audiences for nearly four decades, and it all started with her breakout role in the dark teen comedy Heathers. Before that, she had already shown early promise as an actress.
Ryder began auditioning in the mid-1980s, impressing casting directors with her maturity and intelligence. Denise Di Novi, the producer of Heathers, once said, “Winona was so smart. She was fifteen, she turned sixteen on the movie. She was a prodigy… She really got the words and the imagery. She had the beauty of Veronica. She had the intelligence. She was just the perfect anti-Heather.”
Ryder’s early work included roles in Lucas (1986) and Square Dance (1987), which received praise but only modest commercial success. Her performance in Lucas caught the attention of director Tim Burton, who cast her in Beetlejuice (1988), where she played a goth teenager in a haunted house. The film was a hit, and Ryder later said she owed much of her early career to Burton. She also appeared in 1969 (1988), acting alongside Kiefer Sutherland and Robert Downey Jr.
Everything changed in 1989 when Ryder starred in Heathers. The film was a satirical take on high school life and violence, where Ryder and Christian Slater’s characters become involved in a series of deadly pranks against popular students. Her agent warned her that taking the role could ruin her career, but Ryder went ahead.
Critics loved her performance. The Washington Post wrote, “Ryder […] makes us love her teen-age murderess, a bright, funny girl with a little Bonnie Parker in her. She is the most likable, best-drawn young adult protagonist since the s**** innocent of Gregory’s Girl.” Although the film struggled at the box office, it became a cult classic and firmly established Ryder as a serious actress.
After Heathers, Ryder’s career took off. In 1990, she starred in Edward Scissorhands with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, followed by Mermaids with Cher and Christina Ricci. Roger Ebert praised her, saying, “Winona Ryder, in another of her alienated outsider roles, generates real charisma.” That same year, she appeared in Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael and made a cameo in a Roy Orbison music video. Ryder was also slated for The Godfather Part III but withdrew due to nervous exhaustion.
Throughout the 1990s, Ryder built on her success with roles in Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), The Age of Innocence (1993), and Little Women (1994). She earned multiple award nominations, including two Oscars, and proved she could handle a wide range of characters, from period dramas to contemporary stories. Films like Reality Bites and Girl, Interrupted further showcased her talent, with critics praising her ability to convey deep emotion.
Despite her success, Ryder faced setbacks in the 2000s, including a four-year career hiatus following her 2001 shoplifting arrest. Insurance issues limited her roles, and some projects were canceled. Still, she gradually returned to the screen with films like A Scanner Darkly (2006), Black Swan (2010), and The Iceman (2012).
Her career resurgence reached new heights with Netflix’s Stranger Things, which premiered in 2016. Ryder plays Joyce Byers, a mother searching for her missing son. Critics praised her performance, and the series brought her to a new generation of fans. Ryder also returned to iconic roles in commercials and short films, and she reprised her role in Edward Scissorhands and the Beetlejuice sequel in 2024.
Heathers was more than just a film for Ryder, it was the role that opened doors, defined her early career, and gave her the credibility to take on complex and memorable parts for decades. Her ability to combine intelligence, vulnerability, and charisma on screen started with that role, and it still influences how audiences see her today.
Winona Ryder’s journey shows how one bold role can shape a career for a lifetime. Heathers was risky, edgy, and unlike anything else at the time, but it cemented Ryder as a talent to watch.
